Running Toilet

One of the most common problems with toilets are leaks. Most of these leaks are caused by worn out seals. Seal replacement is not a particularly easy job, but with a bit of knowledge and the right tools, you can pull it off. The reason why you may want to do the repair yourself is that, by the time you call a plumber, your bathroom may already be full with wastewater.

The first thing that you need to do is shut down the main water supply. Some toilets are equipped with a local valve, while other are not. In order to be sure that you won’t cause a flood in your bathroom, shut down the main water valve. Once this is done, flush down the toilet several times until all the water in the bowl drains out. Remove the caps over the nuts that hold the bowl to the floor, and then unscrew the bolts. Rock the bowl until it gets loose.

Purchase a new wax seal from your local hardware store. Place the seal over the flange on the floor and make sure that it is centered. Place the toilet over the seal and apply some pressure to help the seal do its actual sealing. Screw the bolts back in place, place the caps that you removed earlier, and apply silicone caulk to the junction of floor and bowl.
